Tours and Activities:
Tables for All Tastes
Mónica Pons Jorge González (1) y Marcelo Sola (2)Both the downtown and the outskirts feature distinct gourmet proposals that lure visitors on a tour around various restaurants.

Punta Arenas is a cosmopolitan city and, as such, its cuisine contemplates recipes made with sea products as well as with ingredients from other confines of the world. When it comes to eating, the possibilities are many and highly creative.
La Luna Restaurant
Very popular among foreign tourists, this place is recommended by international tourist guides due to the varied items in its menu, its affordable prices and its comfortable and cozy atmosphere. The aim of this venue is to offer quality and polite customized assistance.
Its cuisine is run by a group of young chefs who have succeeded in interpreting the customers’ taste. Seafood, fish and meat from the area, in addition to homemade pasta and light sauces delight all palates.
We tasted spider crab and seafood chupe (stew): a classic in the venue. They are served in very hot clay bowls. Parmesan oysters, sea soup and jardín de Luna y mar (Moon and sea garden) are the most coveted dishes for those who have already visited this restaurant. For dessert, we tasted calafate mousse, made with a delicious local berry.
Excellent Chilean wineries complete the menu. Of course we ordered a good pisco sour which we enjoyed as we waited for the main course. Also, a large world map on the wall invites visitors to plant their own flag.

The Farmer Restaurant
As far as exotic food made with non-traditional ingredients is concerned, Hotel Isla Rey is the answer. Its restaurant has become famous for its dishes based on eastern or Indian inspiration.
It is a good thing to get there without haste and to let ourselves be tempted by the chef’s expertise on the delicacies and unusual spices. This avant-garde restaurant specializes in stews and condiments. They are already a trademark.

We were recommended a local dish: Magellan spider crab starter with home baked cracker. Then, hare tenderloin accompanied with rice and Indian fruit. Spicy food enthusiasts will be delighted by sautéed eel cooked in the eastern way: simply aphrodisiac.
Its wine list shows off Chilean boutique wineries. The atmosphere features English decoration which contributes to the privacy of each table.
Los Ciervos Restaurant
Estancia Río Los Ciervos main house offers an appealing site to enjoy a good table. Healthy and tasty food with distinctive touches, good quality and fresh ingredients are the basis of this menu. The owners work hard to guarantee each customer will come back and, in turn, multiply their cooking.

We enjoyed some appetizers and pisco sour while pans and pots were getting our delicacies ready. It was then when we heard the stories narrated by the host, which taught us a little bit more about Punta Arenas. Black and white and sepia images covered the walls of the restaurants and illustrated the old anecdotes.
We tasted some smoked salmon seasoned with lemon. A simple but exquisite dish. We also ordered some Patagonian lamb ribs with potatoes and chimichurri. It was perfect.
For dessert, we forgot everything about our diet with some pancakes filled with manjar (milk jam). They combined softness and sweetness in the proper measure. Chilean wineries dwell in the cellar of this delightful place to enchant lunch or dinner.
