Tours and Activities:
Raúl Marín Balmaceda and its sea
Mónica Pons Eduardo EpifanioExpert guides took us down on a tour around the huge sea and the fjords and rivers emptying their courses into it.
The sea is stunning at Raúl Marín Balmaceda. Its vastness and the swinging of the tides and the winds force sea outings to be subject to the weather conditions.
The dwellers of this town are aware of this and if sailing conditions are good, they set sail. Otherwise, they wait. Simple and clever at the same time.
We arrived in the fishing lodge and immediately felt as if we were at home. We placed our luggage at one of its comfortable cabins. We were ready to go on some of the many tours available in this area.
The cabins look just like local houses, with tiles of Patagonian cypress noble wood. Inside, the comfort of the best hotels and the coziness of feeling as if we were at home.
To the Sea...
Wearing warm clothes and facing the wind, we started the long-awaited tour across the sea on one of the many watercrafts available to sail its waters.
We left the fishermen’s pier behind, went past the ferry ramp and got deep into the various nooks familiar to the motorboat.
We enjoyed the fantastic sensation of the wind on our face, our hair blowing in the wind and the small islands and channels appearing before us little by little.
We arrived at the lighthouse island, dwelled by pelicans. As we approached this site, hundreds of these birds soared up into a cloud of wings in sign of shyness before our presence. We could not come close to the sea lion colony, as the waves were not favorable to let us see those huge mammals from a close distance.
We went around areas with large rocks, where Hugo, our expert helmsman, chose the best route to go through safely.
The color of the water changed according to the light and the wind.
Where the Sea Takes Us
Although it was not an ideal day for sailing, we could access wonderful nooks, such as Los Leones Island and Fjord Pitipalena. At each site, we let ourselves be influenced by Hugo’s suggestions. He has known the sea environment since he was a very young boy.
Back in our cabin, as we enjoyed a bath in the open air in a hot water tub offered by our hosts, we learned about other boat tours. We resolved to leave those experiences for our next visit to this beautiful spot.
During dinner, we had a pleasant conversation with the owners, who told us about other nooks in this Patagonian village of matchless quality and coziness. Several anecdotes about fishing outings with expert guides helped us get to learn a little more than the information usually offered to visitors.
In the meantime, we would listen to the murmur of the waves breaking softly against the shore.
Such is this sea village: wild at times. Charming and generous at all times.
